Here’s three team killers that can quickly destroy your team environment:

  • Lack of Clarity: When team members don’t have clarity on the roles they should each be playing, or clarity on the overall vision they are working towards and reason for the team’s existence, they will quickly lose motivation.
  • Lack of Skill: When team members don’t have the skills to perform their roles well, they will quickly become demotivated, and so will their team mates. On a football team no one wants to pass to a player they think is sub-standard. In the same way, having any team member not capable of doing their job well is a real team killer for the whole group.
  • Lack of Commitment: Sometimes people have clarity on their role and the skills to capably deliver, but they’re just not committed – perhaps to the team, to the vision, or just to doing good work. And that lack of commitment will cause other team members to quickly lose their own commitment.

So these are three team killers that can quickly destroy any momentum and progress that your team may be making. Your job as a leader is to make sure none of these three are lacking. How will you do that on your team?
